Common Fridge Problems to look out for

Inside the Fridge Freezer
  1. Don't overload your fridge as this could block circulation and cause the fridge not to cool properly throughout.
  2. Check the evaporation hole, located at the bottom rear of the fridge section, is not obstructed or clogged up as this could lead to ice build up or inversely, a temperature increase.
  3. Frequently check to see or hear if the fan is operating as expected.   The fan is located behind the freezer box compartment.

Multiple Choices For Fridges, Freezers, And Fridge-Freezers

When you are looking for a fridge, a freezer, or a fridge-freezer you will quickly find that there are an awful lot of choices. All of the major electrical appliance manufacturers are heavily involved in refrigeration of all types, and many of them don’t just make a half dozen refrigerators, for example, but some make dozens. Take AEG Refrigeration. They make no fewer than 70 different types of fridge – that’s before you even start to think about freezers or fridge-freezers.

Seventy fridges! They make integrated (built-in) refrigerators and freestanding ones. They make ones that go under the counter, and they make tall ones. They make narrow ones and they make wide ones. They make American style fridges with two doors. They now have a fridge with interchangeable door storage which they call Customflex®. This lets you change all the sections in the door and arrange them exactly the way you want them so that you can have everything precisely where you want it.

They even make three different types of wine cooler to keep your white and rose wines at the perfect temperature. (What’s not to like about that?). Some people even like to chill red wines, although that is a matter of personal preference, but there is nothing to stop you from doing that as well if that is how you like your wine. Although the wine buffs would tell you otherwise, there is no really right or wrong way to drink wine – whichever way you enjoy it is right for you.

Then there are freezers. AEG make no less than 62 different freezers, again incorporating built-in or freestanding models, and under the counter types, tall ones, narrow ones, wide ones, and a freestanding side by side model with storage solutions for larger items. Most of these models are also frost free, so you never have to empty them and defrost them.

As for fridge-freezers, there are 93 different models to choose from. These use AEG’s TwinTech cooling system which keeps everything at the optimum temperature. The fridge and freezer compartments work independently so that everything is kept as fresh as possible.

How To Choose A Microwave Oven

Microwave ovens are available in three different groups, the first of which is a solo microwave oven. This will perform just the basic functions of a microwave. It will have five or six different power settings and a timer. Solo microwaves are able to cook food, re-heat food, and defrost. They can be very useful for people with limited space and they are also suitable for people who aren’t really interested in cooking as an art but just want to be able to cook a meal quickly.

This sort of microwave is usually the cheapest and may cost as little as £40.00.

A grill microwave is basically a solo microwave with the addition of a grill built in. In a solo microwave you can’t grill food or crisp it but with a grill microwave you can carry out all the tasks that would usually be done in the grill fitted to your main kitchen oven. With a grill microwave you can make toast, grill crispy bacon, cook pizzas, and more. You will also get a more even finish because of the rotating turntable inside. However, even with a grill microwave you can’t do any baking as you would in a normal convection oven. You would need to purchase a combination – or combi – microwave in order to do this.

A combi microwave works in the same way as a conventional oven and has a fan which circulates hot air inside the oven. With a combi microwave you can do anything you would in a standard oven, including roasting, baking, browning, and crisping. It is much easier to clean than a conventional oven, and it uses less electricity too.

There are many different manufacturers of microwave ovens of all types, including Siemens microwaves. Siemens manufacture a range of built-in microwave ovens which fit all standard upper cabinets and tall units perfectly. The doors on a Siemens microwave can be hinged on either the right or the left in order to fit in with the design of your kitchen, and they have been designed so that they co-ordinate perfectly with other Siemens appliances.

Integrated Fridges Manufactured By Bosch

Bosch is a well-known name when it comes to refrigeration and the company produces a range of fridges, freezers, and fridge-freezers in varying styles and designs, from under the counter models to tall versions and American style designs as well.

It has a choice of several different models when it comes to integrated fridges, which it refers to as built-in fridges, but they are the same thing. Perhaps one of the most important things about Bosch integrated fridges is that most of them are A++ rated when it comes to electricity usage and performance. This is only one point below the highest rating on the EU system and it has to be said that there is not very much difference between A++ and A+++. It also appears to be the case that not very many manufacturers produce fridges with A++ ratings and Bosch is one of the few.

Bosch fridges are fitted with LED lighting with a soft start, and the company claims that the lights will last for the lifetime of the appliance. Many of the integrated fridges have a choice of different features such as extra deep door trays which give extra space for bottles and large containers. Many also have their MultiBox drawers which have a rippled base in order to protect fruit and vegetables from condensation. The shelves are made of safety glass and are very stable and easy to clean – just a quick wipe over is all they need. They also give a perfect view.

Electronic temperature controls on the Bosch fridges allow you to set the target temperature very precisely and easily, and their FreshSense system guarantees a constant internal temperature so that the food stays fresher for longer.

None of the fridges that are made by Bosch seem to have an ice box. The company seems to work on the assumption that if you only need a fridge you already have or are planning to buy a freezer. This means that you get more storage space in the fridge than you otherwise would, and also it costs less to run because it doesn’t have to use additional electricity for an ice box.

A Look At AEG Integrated Fridges

When it comes to refrigeration one of the best known names is AEG. These fridges, freezers, and fridge-freezers are noted for their innovative designs and solutions and are always at the cutting edge of development.

There is a range of AEG integrated fridges on the market which are ideal if you are upgrading your kitchen this summer since you can keep that look of symmetry in the kitchen by having the fridge and the freezer behind doors that match the rest of your design.

Some of the AEG fridges are standard fridges and some are larder fridges. Some people question the difference, but a larder fridge is simply a fridge which doesn’t have an ice box. A larder fridge is worth considering if you have a freezer because it will use less electricity than a standard fridge. It also gives you more space for fresh vegetable and food storage because you get an extra shelf where the ice box would have been. This is especially useful if you have a compact under the counter integrated fridge.

AEG also produce tall integrated fridges which contain much more storage space than the under the counter models. These fridges are the ones to choose if you have a large family and need al that extra space for fruits, vegetable, eggs, lots of cold drinks such as orange juice and colas, in addition to a selection of meats, bacon, sausages, and fish, and of course a bottle or two of wine that will cover the family needs for several days at a time.

One of the tall upright models has shelves covering the top two thirds of the unit with three variously sized drawers at the bottom. The Zero Degree compartment in the AEG refrigerator allows you to choose and adjust the temperature and the humidity setting in each drawer individually so that everything is maintained in perfect condition. The fridge has a childproof control panel and also has the Coolmatic feature which allows for the quick chilling of fresh foods when large quantities of food are placed in the fridge. After a set period, the Coolmatic feature switches itself off automatically and the fridge returns to the pre-set temperature.

The Range Of Options When Purchasing A New Cooker

If you are considering the purchase of a new cooker you have quite a range of options. To begin with, you have a choice of fuels. You can have a gas cooker or an electric cooker. You could also have a dual fuel cooker which has gas hobs and an electric oven. In addition, you might also want to consider a range. This can be dual fuel also, or you could opt for one which is oil-fired. The latter can be used to heat your whole house and your hot water, but you need to bear in mind that you have to keep it burning all year round, including in the summer time.

New gas cookers, by and large, are cheaper to run than electric cookers, it being estimated that if you use the cooker for ten hours a week the annual cost of gas will be about £35.00 compared with around £80.00 for electric.

Gas cookers light up instantly and you can control the heat on a gas hob very precisely. However, it is often the case that the oven will not heat equally, with the top being hotter than the bottom. However, this could actually have some value if you need to cook food at different temperatures. An electric oven, by contrast will heat evenly, especially when it has a fan.

At NewLife Appliances we also supply cookers with double ovens. These provide more cooking space than a single oven, but of course you can cook at different temperatures. However, while there is more space overall, each individual oven will be smaller than a single oven.

When purchasing any new cooker you need to ensure that it will fit into your kitchen. In general, cookers come in widths of 50 cm, 55 cm, and 60 cm so if you want a larger model you need to be sure it will fit. A range is much bigger, and can be up to 100 cm. With a range you will usually have two ovens and a warming oven, a grill, and anything up to eight burners on the hob.

Buying A New Microwave: Should You Get A Free-Standing One Or Built-In?

When considering the options for new microwaves there are a few things to take into account. Basically the choice is between buying a free-standing microwave or having a built-in model. So what are the pros and cons?

There is little doubt that a built-in microwave can be more aesthetically pleasing than a free-standing model. If you are completely re-designing your kitchen it is a simple matter to include a new microwave into the plan. It provides a neater, more streamlined look and feel to the kitchen. You could have a stainless steel microwave which will blend into the background, or for a more “snappy” modern feel a shiny black would look good.

Another advantage of a built-in microwave is that it takes up less space.  A free-standing model is going to have to sit on the counter top. This may be acceptable if you have a big kitchen, but of course many kitchens are quite small – particularly those in rented accommodation where a house may have been converted into flats and the landlord naturally wants to cram in as many tenants as possible.

You could also consider a built-in or free-standing combi oven. Again, the free-standing one takes up more space. However, a free-standing microwave provides flexibility. If you rent, rather than own, your home, a free-standing microwave can be a better choice, partly because people who rent tend to move more often than homeowners, and partly because many landlords will not permit tenants to add built-in devices.

This leads to another point. Built in models are generally more expensive than free-standing, and, of course, they have to be built in, whereas a free-standing model is ready to use straight out of the box. This means that unless you are competent with installation and electrical work you will have to get an electrician to do the job for you which adds to the expense.

Built-in microwave ovens also usually are fitted with a vent hood which allows for better ventilation. At NewLife Appliances we supply both free-standing and built-in microwaves, so ultimately the choice is yours.

Is It Time To Buy A New Washing Machine?

Washing machines are necessary household appliances that can cost a lot. But when you need a new machine, you simply have to buy one. One way to prevent the hassle of your washing machine breaking down in the middle of a laundry cycle (on a very busy day) is to be mindful about when the time has come to buy a new appliance.

Here are some signs that can tell you it is time to starting looking for new washing machines so that you can buy at the best price.

Leaks; Often and Excessive
If water leaks from your washing machine, it can indicate a major problem with the appliance. The problem might go away with repairs, but consider it a sign that you might need to buy a new washer sooner rather than later.

Excessive Noise
When a washing machine starts to make a lot of noise when in use, consider it a warning sign about bigger problems. Often, a washer can make noises if the clothes are not loaded properly or if it is unbalanced. But if the noises continues even after rectifying the balance and the laundry arrangement issues; it could indicate a problem with the machine. You can get it repaired. But if the repair costs are high or if the problem doesn’t go away; you may want to think about buying a new washer.

A Problem with the Drum
The drum may not fill with water adequately enough for the wash cycle to begin. The drum may not move after the water has filled. Repairing a drum may end up costing you a lot. If your washing machine is quite old, it is better to buy a new machine rather than opt for repairs.

Inefficient Performance
When the machine stops working well, it is time to replace it with a new model. If the machine is not working as it should; you may need to use more detergent or the appliance might draw extra electricity to run.

Age of the Machine
If your washing machine is nearing its 10th year, it is better to start saving for a new one.

3 Reasons To Invest In An Under Counter Refrigerator

Big refrigerators may look good. But large appliances are not for everyone. First, it may not fit into your kitchen space. Second, you may not need a refrigerator with a lot of capacity. Then there are households where even a big refrigerator may not be sufficient. But there are several options to meet the refrigeration requirement of every household. One such option is to use an under counter refrigerator.

Here are three reasons why you should invest in a small refrigerator you can install under your kitchen counter.

Reason 1 – Your kitchen is small.
For small kitchen spaces, under counter refrigerators are perfect. You can meet your refrigeration requirements as well as save space in the kitchen. You can easily fit a small fridge in the kitchen even if you have only limited under counter space.

Reason 2 – You need more refrigeration options in the kitchen.
For big households, one refrigerator may not be enough. But you might also not have the space for a larger fridge or a second medium-sized one. In such cases, you can invest in an under counter refrigerator that suits your requirements.

If you are not keen to invest a lot of money on a second refrigerator; a good option is to invest in refurbished appliances. You can look into refurbished under counter fridges to buy at attractive discounted price. It will provide you with extra refrigeration without taking up a lot of space in the kitchen. You can buy a model with or without a freezer and even with sliding drawers.

Reason 3 – You want space for more movement in the kitchen.
You can stow a fridge under the counter and free up a lot of space in the kitchen. A fridge under the counter also creates a streamlined profile in the kitchen, which can look particularly appealing for small kitchen spaces.

You can use the extra space for more cabinets, countertop or even to arrange some racks or tables for storage purposes. If overcrowding in the kitchen is something you want to avoid; under counter refrigerators offer an easy option to free up some precious space.

Whatever your reason for wanting to buy an under counter refrigerator, you can find a style to suit your household requirements.

Things To Consider When Buying A Microwave

A microwave can make life a lot easier in the kitchen. When you need to reheat food quickly, there is nothing like having the convenience of a microwave. It can last you many years depending on the quality and usage. Whether you are planning to buy a microwave for the first time or thinking of replacing your existing model with a new one; there are some factors to consider so that you can find your perfect appliance.

Reheating and More
If you simply plan to use a microwave for defrosting and reheating purposes, you can get by with smaller units without additional features. If you want to cook, grill, roast with it and use a microwave extensively; a convection model may be right for you. Convection microwaves are equipped with heating elements along with the usual microwave technology. Some models are a combination of microwave and traditional ovens.

When buying new microwaves, consumers must think about the purpose of having one in their kitchen and then make a decision. If you know what you are paying for, you can buy the perfect microwave for your kitchen.

Power and Size
For cooking meals and using a microwave extensively for the entire family, a small microwave won’t be sufficient.  You can buy a medium-sized appliance or even a full-sized one that can cater to your families needs.

For a single-person use or for small offices, a small-sized microwave may be sufficient. When buying a microwave, consider the size as well as the power of the appliance. If you want to cook family meals in less time, buy a large-sized microwave that can deliver 1000 watts at least if not more.
New and Old

If you have budget constraints, consider buying used models that are refurbished to perfection and then sold for attractive prices. You can also find brand new appliances at reduced prices available in many stores. These appliances have minor defects such as a scratch or two; or peeling paint. If cost is a factor for you, look for both new and refurbished appliances before making a purchase.

5 Reasons To Buy An Electric Cooker

Perhaps you already have a preferred model when it comes to a cooker. If you have favoured gas cookers until now but want to try cooking with an electric model, here are five reasons to consider before making your purchase.

  1. Electric cookers offer multiple functions that you can use at the same time.
  2. This can translate into saving time as well as allowing you to cook or bake something more efficiently. But do know that not all new electric cookers come with multifunctional ovens or cooking options.
  3. It is easier to clean electric cookers.
  4. The cooking surfaces on electric cookers are flat. You can simply clean it without having to fiddle with metal supports for the cookware. While cleaning time may not be something you may think about when making a significant appliance purchase, it can be a big convenience for people with big families or those who are very busy.
  5. Electric cookers offer consistent temperatures.
  6. If you bake a lot or prepare food for everyday family meals; an even and consistent temperature from a cooker can be a time saver and result in better-tasting dishes.
  7. It is possible to control heating of the coils in electric cookers to match the efficiency of gas cookers.
  8. The main reason people prefer to use a gas cooker over an electric one is the faster heating time. But new electric cooker models; even the ones with coils, now can heat up fast and save you time and money on electric bills. Some advanced coil models even come with dual wattage so that the user can adjust the energy consumption for heating up smaller pots and pans.
  9. Electric cookers are available with advanced technology and features.
  10. You can buy smooth or induction tops instead of coils. For a new kitchen redesign, you may want a cooker to match other appliances in terms of advanced technology and appearance.
Whatever cooker you decide to buy, it is important to consider all your requirements before making a purchase.
